Pet fashion show in India

Pet a prêt!

People love pets and how in India- They are groomed for catwalk! Seriously. For some years now the Bombay Veterinary College at Parel has been organizing dog shows. They have now evolved as pet fashion shows. The number of participants has gone up and so have the number of pets. To begin 2010, the pet show had some of the best breeds of man’s best friend. Some who graced the catwalk to many cheers and whistles were twin pugs, Labradors, a Neapolitan Mastiff, a Miniature Pinscher, a Great Dane, an Irish setter and many more, all of which were spotlessly clean and well groomed. The catwalk was a huge draw itself, but this year the animals were seen ‘socializing amongst themselves too. A bark here and a gruff there and they were calling names to each other. Some had arrived fashionably late for the mega-event. There were big hounds, tiny poodles grunting and seeking love from new friends. Unlike regular dog shows where winners are announced this pet fashion show did not have any competition. The four legged friends were seen moving around with their masters, preening towards the cameras and shaking their hands and legs. The fashion show concluded with a big applause and not without an understanding that it would be a bigger and better show next year.

So what did the human models learn from their four legged pals? Not to bitch, not to compete and treat each other with more compassion and kindness. Perhaps animal pets are the greatest equalizers for friendship and unconditional love. In a city like Mumbai where stress is beaten by road rage, these happy owners have shown that one can remain cool and calm with their relationship to animals. Increasingly Indian metros are accepting various breeds of domesticated animals as pets. The respect that people do show is seen on the roads when the traffic moves around the cow or buffalo sitting in the middle of the road! The animals are not heckled. It is too far fetched to think cow fashion shows would make a debut but cattle fairs are a common occurrence in many rural areas of India.
